چکیده

Wediscuss some consequences for the determination of the surface gravity parameter of very metal-poor halo dwarfs in the new light shed upon these objects from the Hipparcos astrometry. Whereas it has become clear that standard spectroscopic LTE iron ionization equilibria are prone to systematic errors, in the sense, that stages of evolution are predicted that are actually not yet reached, the method that circumvents this shortcoming bymeans of pressure-dependent strong line wings, faces the problem that such tracers are considerably weakened, or even absent, in the visible spectra of very metal-poor stars. We exemplify this circumstance by means of two nearby halo stars, the well-known HD 140283 and the turnoff star G 84-29, both significantly below one hundredth of the solar metallicity.

Abundances and Kinematics of Field Halo and Disk Stars I: Observational Data and Abundance Analysis

We describe observations and abundance analysis of a high-resolution, high-S/N survey of 168 stars, most of which are metal-poor dwarfs. We follow a self-consistent LTE analysis technique to determine the stellar parameters and abundances, and estimate the effects of random and systematic uncertainties on the resulting abundances. Element-to-iron ratios are derived for key alpha, odd, Fe-peak, ...

Subgiants as probes of galactic chemical evolution ⋆ , ⋆ ⋆ , ⋆ ⋆ ⋆

Chemical abundances for 23 candidate subgiant stars have been derived with the aim at exploring their usefulness for studies of galactic chemical evolution. High-resolution spectra from ESO CAT-CES and NOTSOFIN covered 16 different spectral regions in the visible part of the spectrum. Some 200 different atomic and molecular spectral lines have been used for abundance analysis of ∼ 30 elemental ...

Early Galactic Evolution of Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen

We present results on carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances for a sample of unevolved metal-poor stars with metallicities in the range −0.3< [Fe/H]< −3. Oxygen abundances derived from different indicators are compared showing consistently that in the range 0.3 >[Fe/H]> −3.0, the [O/Fe] ratio increases from approximately 0 to 1. We find a good agreement between abundances based on the forbidde...

Ju n 19 99 Stellar iron abundances : non - LTE effects

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT We report new statistical equilibrium calculations for Fe I and Fe II in the atmosphere of Late-Type stars. We used atomic models for Fe I and Fe II having respectively 256 and 190 levels, as well as 2117 and 3443 radiative transitions. Photoionization cross-sections are from the Iron Project. These atomic models were used to investigate NLTE (non local themod...

Non-LTE analysis of neutral magnesium in cool stars

Calculations of the statistical equilibrium of magnesium in the solar photosphere have shown that NLTE populations hardly affect Mg line formation in the Sun. However, in metal-poor dwarfs and giants the influence of electron collisions is reduced, and the ultraviolet radiation field, enhanced due to reduced background line opacity, results in more pronounced NLTE effects. In the photosphere of...
